Dear Web Visitor,

Welcome to the Desert Rivers Audubon website! This new website contains information about all of our events and activities, news around the local and international birding world, photos from local members and other photographers, information about supporting the chapter, and much more.

I encourage you to explore the site and check out our regular recurring activities such as the monthly birdwalks and weekly field trips. Our field trips are led by knowledgable “naturalists” who want to share their passion for our habitats and the species that inhabit them. We travel to local and state-wide birding “hotspots” to provide you with great opportunities to learn about our bird and other wildlife species. Families with 4th -5th graders are welcome.

Various web pages link you to our Desert Rivers Calendar - use this calendar to acquaint yourself with all that DRAS is offering. The very best way to stay informed is to join our email announcements list - contact me at  mikerupp@cox.net to do so.

Desert Rivers is a group of like-minded people who are interested in teaching conservation values by offering adults and children with a variety of instruction in a variety of venues. We believe that teaching a “nature ethic” now will positively impact our environment in the future, and hopefully produce conservation voters and leaders who will value and protect our remaining habitats

To do this, we have originated some unique programs, and in partnership with other groups are on our way to teaching literally thousands of kids and their families each year through opportunities to “connect with nature”, to use National Audubon’s motto.

The opening of the new Nina Mason Pulliam Audubon Nature Center will soon impact thousands of schoolkids near the center with various nature programming. Desert Rivers will be providing as many volunteer teachers as possible to assist with this work. If you’re a school teacher, or want to train, please contact me about this exciting opportunity.

Desert Rivers Audubon is the newest Audubon chapter in the state, primarily serving the “east valley, but we participate in events all over the valley. We are incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit with the IRS, and are raising funds from corporations and foundations to greatly expand our outreach. We have a very far-reaching development plan to grow the chapter into an exceptional player in our field.

Like any new organization, we have opportunities in the areas of leadership, volunteers, and finances, and I invite you to become part of our exciting team by sharing your expertise, or join training classes to help you become comfortable working with kids and adults. I know that once you start sharing your passion for birds and other wildlife, you’ll find that you are rewarded as much as those you share with.

Our monthly membership meetings are open to all and are posted on this site under ”Events/Meetings”. I hope you’ll come and join with a friendly group of people who want to make an impact on our local habitats.
